John Crichton-Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute (June 30 1744–November 16 1814) was the son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute and Mary Wortley-Montagu, 1st Baroness Mount Stuart.

He married, firstly, Charlotte Jane Hickman (d. January 28 1800) (daughter of on 12 November 1766 and had five children:

• John Crichton-Stuart, Baron Mount Stuart (25 September 1767–22 January 1794)
• Charlotte Crichton-Stuart (c. 1775–5 September 1847)
• Lord Henry Crichton-Stuart (7 June 1777–19 August 1809)
• Captain Lord William Crichton-Stuart (18 November 1778–28 July 1814)
• Rear-Admiral George Crichton-Stuart (1 March 1780–19 February 1841)

He married, secondly, Frances Coutts (d. November 12 1832) on 17 September 1800 and had two children:

• Frances Crichton-Stuart (d. 29 March 1859)
• Lord Dudley Coutts Crichton-Stuart (11 January 1803–17 November 1854)
