Andranik Toros Ozanian, or Zoravar Andranik, (Armenian: Անդրանիկ Թորոս Օզանյան or Զորավար Անդրանիկ) (1865—1927) was an Armenian military commander and national hero. He was born in the Black Fortress, Karahisar, near Erzerum. After losing a wife and son at an early age, he joined the Armenian freedom movement in hte Ottoman empire, and participated in various parties, including Dashanks. Adranik participated in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, within the Bulgarian army. After returning to Armenia he organized volunteer units against the Ottoman army. As the First Republic of Armenia fell, he immigrated to Fresno, California, and passed away in 1927. His remains were moved to Paris in 1928, and returned to Armenia in 1999. |
