Amba Alagi is a mountain located between the cities of Dessie and Mek'ele in modern-day Ethiopia.

History

The first occurred in December 1895. On December 7, the Abyssinians defeated an Italian army of 2,350 led by and a day later, on December 8, the Ethiopian emperor, Menelik II, drove out the Italian forces of General . After the defeat, the Italians withdrew from Amba Alagi and Gondar to Eritrea.

The second occurred on April 1941. On April 26, during World War II, the Italian fortress of Dessie located south of Amba Alagi was captured by South African forces. On May 17, it was besieged by British troops under General Cunningham and ultimately captured when the Italian garrison surrendered.

The film , shot in 1953 by , glorifies the Italian defense against the British.
